Melbourne’s new bar in the clouds set for opening

by Michael Wade

Elevated 140 metres above the city’s streets, Sky Bar Melbourne will open the doors to its drinking and dining experience on June 30.

Located on the 40th floor of Yarra Hotel Group’s Oakwood building, the venue offers views spanning Port Phillip Bay, the Yarra River and the CBD skyline. It will open to the public with 5-star restaurant Strato, wine and cocktail lounges, a floating outdoor terrace and spaces for private dining.

Yarra Hotel Group director Norman Khan said the vision for Sky Bar Melbourne is to not only “show off” the city but to showcase “local artists, foods, wines, beers and distilleries”.

“We know the past two years have been hard and dining out is dearly missed. We have put a lot of effort into making Sky Bar Melbourne an entire experience.”

The Sky Bar Lounge hosts up to 70 people and sits adjacent to the restaurant, Strato. It boasts a 16-metre stone bar and outdoor terrace. Above sits Level 41, Sky Bar’s area for private functions and dining.

Strato, the fine dining restaurant overlooking Port Phillip Bay, seats up to 60 guests, has its own bar and serves up contemporary modern Australian cuisine, sourcing ingredients from places like King Island and Mount Zero in Victoria. The menu will change four times a year, reflecting the availability of seasonal produce.

On the weekends, Stratos offers a classic high tea. A ‘boozy brunch’, pairing mimosas with breakfast fare, is also offered on weekends.

Entry to Sky Bar Melbourne is via a private elevator located in the lobby of the Oakwood building in Southbank. Arriving at the 40th floor, guests will step into a projection showing different video loops of Melbourne from the perspective of a bird. The projection is designed to act like a glass floor overlooking the city.
