Fight to save The Butler gains momentum

by Andy Young

The fight to save the iconic views of Sydney bar and restaurant, The Butler Potts Point, is gaining momentum with over 300 objections lodged against the development application which would block the views.

The development application, for 30A-34 Brougham Street, Potts Point, which was lodged in April, would see the existing four-storey building, located directly in front of The Butler, knocked down and replaced with a seven-storey apartment block.

As well and encroaching closer to the boundary on the back of the Victoria Street buildings, the proposal significantly increases the height of the building in the space, which would block The Butler’s stunning views of the Sydney cityscape.

Applejack Hospitality operates The Butler restaurant and has 10 years left on the lease with the property landlord. Applejack says The Butler is an integral part of the thriving Potts Point community, offering an exceptional hospitality experience for all to enjoy. If the project proposal gets approved, eliminating this iconic vista, the bar and restaurant faces closure, robbing the public of the opportunity to continue to share in this rare Manhattan style view. It will heavily impact one of the city’s cultural hubs, that has already seen neighbouring Kings Cross beleaguered by gentrification and residential development.

The Butler and its neighbours are committed to saving Potts Points’ city views and you can still send in submissions to fight this development – email for submissions: dasubmissions@cityofsydney.nsw.gov.au
