Twilight Tails bar takeover series brings Shingo Gokan to Perth

by Molly Nicholas

A new event, Twilight Tails, will bring global bartending talent to Perth’s Songbird Bar through a series of bar takeovers, kicking off with an exclusive guest shift featuring Shingo Gokan of The SG Tavern in Tokyo and his team.

The award-winning cocktail bar will welcome internationally acclaimed bartenders from around the world to take part in the Twilight Tails takeover series, inviting Perth locals to experience world-class cocktails without leaving the city, including headliners on the World’s 50 Best Bars list.

Marco Barsotti, Beverage & Bars Manager at The Ritz-Carlton in Perth, where Songbird Bar is located, says: “Following our hugely successful collaborations with Salmon Guru, Galaxy Bar and Maybe Sammy last year, we wanted to expand the experience and give Perth access to the kind of global mixology usually reserved for international capitals.

“Twilight Tails is about creating a destination where both locals and travellers can explore the world through cocktails, and The SG Tavern is the perfect way to launch the series.”

For the first event in the series, Shingo brings signature cocktails from The SG Tavern – the sister venue of The SG Club, also in Tokyo – and a taste of Tokyo’s cocktail scene to Western Australia for one night only, on Saturday 17 May.

The cocktails at The SG Tavern are inspired by the historical journey of the Satsuma Students to the UK in 1865, taking in the flavours experienced along the way in places like Hong Kong, Malaysia, Singapore, India, Malta and England. While Shingo has designed exclusive cocktails for the Twilight Tails takeover, he will showcase the innovative spirit The SG Tavern is known for.

On the evening, guests will have the chance to sample Geisha Perfume (Tanqueray No.10, Japanese bergamot, geisha coffee and wild honey), Dry Banana Martini (Ketel One, The SG Shochu IMO, banana yeast sake and ripe banana) and Que Bonito! (Johnnie Walker Ruby, Okouto Smoky Umami rum and passionfruit) – each priced at $24.

As Twilight Tails unfolds, Songbird Bar will welcome the teams from The Aubrey in Japan, Sago House in Singapore and Danico in Paris to the Perth venue, with dates for the next events yet to be announced.
