Recipe: The 1808

by Brydie Allen

Alex Brown, ALIA Bartender of the Year finalist for 2019, created The 1808 Cocktail for Bacardi’s Legacy Competition. Below we have Brown’s description and recipe.

They came from a country
That was ancient and poor
A land of great beauty
And renowned for its art.
They left with their hopes and the will to work,
To make a new life
In a country unknown.
Wealth they had none
But they had in their hearts
Their father’s last words
Before they depart
“Remember, my son,
Be proud of your work
Remember how it is done.”

They came to Australia
A land of great promise
Of vast open plains, of constant
Drought and everlasting rains
Some went on the land
As their fathers had done,
To make a dream come true
And build a new home.
They worked and sweated
From morning to dusk
Through heat and rain
And choking dust
And out of the forest
Where once the dingo lay
They carved new fields
To plant sugar cane

“These are words written by my grandfather. A man brave enough to leave his homeland on the 18th of the eighth, 1951 and forge a new legacy.  It made me think of Bacardi’s legacy and the similarities in our two families.   The ability to welcome change and let it become a part of them, to grow, to ‘Be More.”
