Hickson House move Marrickville

Hickson House Distilling to move house

by Andy Young

Big changes are brewing for one of Sydney’s favourite craft spirit makers, with Hickson House Distilling Co. announcing it will shift its distilling operations from its original home in The Rocks to a new base in Marrickville.

The move comes after the team was required to stop using the Metcalfe Bond Stores site as a working distillery and bar due to building fire safety compliance. Rather than miss a beat, founders Mikey Enright and Julian Train have opted to consolidate production at an established Marrickville site – giving Hickson House more room to scale its award-winning gin and keep its whisky maturation program on track.

Co-founder Julian Train said: “We’re sad to go from the Metcalfe Bond Stores site, but change presents new opportunities and the move to Marrickville gives us the space Hickson House Distilling Co. needs to grow.

“Hickson House has grown strongly since opening in 2021 with year-on-year sales more than doubling. Relocating to Marrickville ensures that our whisky program and gin portfolio can expand without interruption and our customers can readily access our award-winning range.”

The relocation follows a big win for the brand, with three Hickson House gins recently hitting shelves at Dan Murphy’s across NSW. Enright said it’s a milestone moment:

“It’s a great endorsement for the team to get three of our gins on the shelves at Dan Murphy’s in NSW. We’re excited for the next chapter of Hickson House as we establish ourselves in our new home in Marrickville which helps put us in a good position as we expand our reach in Australia and abroad.”

Master distiller Tim Stones and the entire production crew will make the move with the brand, with operations expected to be up and running in Marrickville in the coming months.

The Hickson House Bar & Kitchen at The Rocks will pour its last drinks on Monday, 8 September, closing temporarily as the team focuses on the transition.
