Andrew Ho Altos Bartender

Guangzhou’s Andrew Ho Named Altos Bartenders’ Bartender 2025

by Andy Young

Andrew Ho, co-founder of Hope & Sesame in Guangzhou, has picked up one of the most respected titles in the bar world: Altos Bartenders’ Bartender 2025.

Voted entirely by fellow bartenders from across Asia, this prestigious peer-voted accolade presented as part of the Asia’s 50 Best Bars program, and recognises Andrew for his leadership, mentorship, and ongoing impact on Mainland China’s rapidly evolving cocktail culture.

Emma Sleight, Head of Content for Asia’s 50 Best Bars, says: “Andrew is not only redefining what great bartending looks like in Mainland China – he’s laying the foundations for the country’s modern cocktail culture with his entrepreneurial vision. His approach to hospitality is grounded in innovation, mentorship and a deep respect for the craft.

“Through global collaborations and consulting work, he has elevated Mainland China’s profile on the international bar stage while fostering a strong sense of community. Andrew is a catalyst for change and a driving force in shaping the future of Asia’s drinks industry. It is incredibly fitting that his peers have recognised this by awarding him the well-deserved Altos Bartenders’ Bartender Award.”

Back in 2016, Ho helped open the first speakeasy-style cocktail bar in Guangzhou, Hope & Sesame, which has proven to be a game-changer for the region.

The bar is known for its high-level technique and innovation, bringing in tools and methods like centrifuges, sous vide, and rotary evaporators long before they were common in China’s bar scene.

Speaking about his win, Ho said: “It is such an incredible honour for my family, team and myself to have my work recognised by such an illustrious panel of industry peers and colleagues. After the excitement settles, it’s important to remember that my work is not done.

“The responsibility to inspire and mentor our next generation still requires my unwavering dedication. However, in the meantime, ganbei. And I hope to see you all in Hope & Sesame for a drink.”

Hope & Sesame has featured on Asia’s 50 Best Bars for six straight years and was ranked No.14 in 2024, and has home the title of Best Bar in Mainland China two years running.

But Ho’s work goes far beyond just one venue. He’s also behind SanYou, a baijiu-forward bar that champions local flavors, and DSK Cocktail Club. Plus, he leads Spirits Architects, a consultancy that helps other bar teams get their concepts, menus, and training programs off the ground.

Ho has also taken part in guest shifts and brand events in over 40 cities and has become a serious influence on how cocktails are being made and served across China.

This award is part of the lead-up to the 10th edition of Asia’s 50 Best Bars, happening July 15 in Macau – the first time the event will be held there. The event has already named the winner of the 2025 Michter’s Art of Hospitality Award.
