Australia’s two bars listed 51-100 by The World’s 50 Best Bars

Huge congratulations to Melbourne newcomer Caretaker’s Cottage and respected Sydney bar Re, for being placed between 51 and 100 by The World’s 50 Best Bars.

Caretaker’s Cottage, which is nominated for Best New Bar at this year’s Australian Liquor Industry Awards, has placed as a new entry at 60 on the list, while Re is placed at 87.

The 51-100 list comes less than a week before the 1-50 announcement on Tuesday 4, October and is voted for by an international compromising of over 650 independent drinks experts.

On social media, the Caretaker’s team said: “Not bad for a little pub on the far side of the planet. A huge thank you to everyone who has helped and supportedus over the years. We genuinely would have given up without you all.

“Thanks also to everyone who voted for us. We are so happy you love our place just as much as we do. Business as usual, nothing changes. Maybe just a bit more Champagne tomorrow.”

Co-Founder Matt Stirling recently spoke to Bars and Clubs about the challenges and benefits of opening a bar in a heritage location.

The 51-100 list includes bars spanning 32 different cities across the world, and this year there are 15 new entries on the list and five cities are featuring for the first time: Kraków, Bratislava, Manchester, Playa Del Carmen and Bogotá. Singapore leads the list with eight bars, including two new entries in Analogue and Republic.

This year’s announcement of The World’s 50 Best Bars, will leave London for the first time, with the top 50 bars being revealed at a live awards ceremony in Barcelona.

Mark Sansom, Director of Content for The World’s 50 Best Bars, said: “We decided to take the ceremony outside of London for the first time in order to shine a light on the other great cocktail cities of the world, and we are delighted to see so many new cities appear on the extended list for the first time – being able to recognise 32 different global cities out of the available 50 positions is particularly pleasing.

“All the bars announced today have continued, with outstanding resilience, to overcome the challenges that still face the industry, and it gives us great pleasure to celebrate double the number of establishments and their achievements.”

The voting process for The World’s 50 Best Bars sees members of its academy asked to vote for seven bars in total, with a maximum of five of those votes for bars in their own country. Voters who were unable to travel internationally in the last year were not required to cast their final two votes. The list of The World’s 50 Best Bars is an annual snapshot of opinions and reflects the state of global travel during the voting period. Voting remained anonymous, secure and the voting process and results are independently adjudicated by Deloitte.
